Laugh Yourself to Sleep
“A good laugh and a long sleep
are the two best cures for anything”
Irish Proverb.
Sleep and laughter. Both are universal experiences every human knows and understands. Both are enjoyed, luxuriated in, coveted – and sometimes elusive.
Both sleep and laughter are good for us. Doctors often recommend and have even been known to prescribe one or the other for better health, both mental and physical.
So why not use them to enhance each other? By laughing yourself to sleep.
Luckily for us, sleep and laughter go so well together, there are plenty of clips for us to share that showcase that sleep is funny!
Your Show of Shows
I must admit, I have just today been introduced to this sketch about Charlie and Doris Hickenlooper (Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca) from the early 1950s. It’s a longish video, and this type of variety show was never my thing. But this is seriously funny! I laughed out loud all by myself, which is my personal measurement for whether something is really funny or not. See if The Sleep Sketch makes you laugh too.
The Andy Griffith Show
Our friends from Mayberry did their fair share of sleeping and napping bits, usually with Barney Fife as the guilty napper trying to hide that he was actually…napping.
and napping…
and napping again!
Seinfeld
George Costanza was always trying to get away with something and cutting corners. Here he has a custom napping area built for himself at work…under his desk.
…and then…the nap.
I Love Lucy
In this scene, where it’s just too quiet, you’ll be treated to a rare scene with Lucy and Ricky together in the same bed (gasp!) for a brief moment before Little Ricky joins them with his dog Fred, who makes the whole scene if you ask me.
Newhart
While I have always loved “The Bob Newhart Show,” I never really dug “Newhart.” Be that as it may, this has to be one of my personal favorites of all time…the final scene of the finale. And it’s not just because it was finally the end of the series (ha-ha). This scene is FUNNY if you’re in the know!
So now that you’ve had a good belly laugh, or maybe a few, go ahead and settle in for a good sleep. Remember, doctors tell us it’s good for us!
And if you’re up for even more, head on over for more proof that sleep is funny!
