Secret Weapon for Falling Asleep
I have a secret weapon for falling asleep. It’s my new superpower. I can now reliably fall asleep just about as quickly as I settle into bed and squish my pillow under my head just so.
It’s a pretty new discovery for me even though I’ve known about it for quite some time. We even suggested it back in our June 2022 blog post called Adults Love Bedtime Stories Too.
I tried it maybe around six months ago but didn’t really give it a chance – I didn’t stick with it, and kind of forgot about it.
Then a couple of months ago, I was having some trouble calming my mind when I got into bed. I was really struggling to relax and get to sleep, and the life stress that was causing that bedtime mind spin persisted for some time.
I needed help. I remembered this little secret weapon, and I finally gave it a real try…
For me, it was like MAGIC!
I kid you not – this has been a life-changer. It helps me fall asleep in minutes, and I mean five minutes or less.
So what is this secret weapon?
It’s a podcast called Nothing Much Happens®. If you liked bedtime stories as a child, you’ll love these short, comforting stories. They’re just interesting enough to keep you listening, letting your brain let go of whatever it’s obsessing on, but just uneventful enough you don’t get stimulated and want to stay awake to see what happens. Brilliant!
Kathryn Nicolai, a self-described ‘architect of cozy,’ writes and narrates these stories. They are richly sensory. She brings you right into a setting and engages all your senses with her words. Her voice is quite soft and soothing, and if you’re like me, you’ll drift off before you even figure out what each story is about.
Sometimes I listen to the same episode many nights in a row, some nights starting at the beginning again, other nights cueing up where I think I fell asleep last time. I don’t think I’ve made it all the way through one of these (roughly 15 minute long) stories yet. I have no idea how any of them end!
There’s more to Nothing Much Happens® and Kathryn than the free podcast. She also has a book by the same name, an ad-free podcast subscription with bonuses, and even a line of merchandise.
But it’s the podcast that’s my secret weapon for falling asleep. Will you give it a try?
